Germany and the European Union, 25 years on from the Fall of the Wall

25 years ago, on 9 November 1989, the Berlin Wall fell and – in the memorable words of the Times headline the next day – the Iron Curtain was “rent asunder”. Ever since then the EU has increasingly been influenced by events in and the wishes of one member state above all others, Germany. How did we reach this point, and what does it mean for the future of the EU?
