The UK election campaign has not followed the script it was meant to. Mrs May will still probably be returned as prime minister on Thursday but her majority may be less than she hoped and her reputation has not been enhanced by the campaign.
Britain faces an uncertain future and a much changed place in the world. But as the election campaigning gets under way, neither major party leader seems prepared to address this. Instead both May and Corbyn, in their different ways, seem more intent on returning to a more comfortable past than embracing the challenges and opportunities ahead.
